NS 8703/Road Slugs *D
Train 427 originates in Portlock Yard and is called daily at 11:30AM. This train heads west with a typical consist of empty coal, box and grain cars. Today, the train was headed up by of D8-40C's with 8703 and 8691 in the lead followed by NS1363, a GP40 and a pair of 4 axle road slugs, #924 and #935. You can just make them out at the rear of the train in this picture. While taking this shot, I had a chance to speak to the engineer. Both slugs were going to Roanoke to be put in storage. |

NS 924 & 935 *D
The now complete #427 moves westward after crossing NS Bridge #7 and we get a good side view of the 2 Road slugs. From Robb Fisher near Roanoke, we get: GP40's 1357-1388 are set up as masters. 1357-1362, 1365 and 66 and 1369 are set up for two slug operation. The RP-E4D's numbers were 9714 to 9741, now they are 914 to 941 to make way for the D940CW's. About half of these slugs are set up for two slug operation as well. ( The mother and slug both have to be equipped for two slug operation ) The main reason why these slugs went to yard service was the retirement of the RP-F6Y's. These slugs were built from retired Fairbanks Morse Trainmasters and were all equipped for two slug operation ( thus the Y designation ). |
