Gate City, VA

Heading out of town with camera in hand to share Railfanning experiences with old and new friends is one of the highlights of the hobby. On the occasion of my trip out to Gate City, VA, I had a chance to meet and shoot with Chris Starnes. Chris is an experienced Railfan and frequents the side of the tracks in the Norfolk Southern Appalachian District.

The pictures below were not taken with a digital camera. Rather, they were shot on Fuji Provia 100 with a Canon EOS-3. They were digitally scanned with a Nikon IV ED filmscanner.

Work Train at Watkins

This train makes its way up a 1.9% grade under power of a GP-59 as it passes under the signal bridge at Watkins, VA pulling gondolas filled with railroad ties.

Trestle over Copper Creek

West and slightly north of Gate City is the trestle over Copper Creek. The location offered an excellent afternoon photo opportunities on this fall day.
