NS 9378
The most often seen power on both departing and arriving trains is the General Electric D9-40CW. At 410,000 lbs and 4,000 horsepower a pair of "Dash-9" locomotives at the head of a train help justify the incoming right of way as the "Race Track.

While shooting at the east end of the Portlock yard, NS 5073, a GP38-2 pushed this caboose in from the NIT Terminals. It was so quiet that I did not hear it until I turned and immediately shot this picture. |

Train NS-123 is a train that comes in from the west VIA the Crewe Yard. NS 9388 and NS 9012, a pair of D9-40CW's with high traction are a head of this daily Intermodel. |

NS 6649, an SD60 is lead power on train 427 as it powers past peanut elevators in Windsor, VA pulling a load of empties. It is followed by NS 6146, an SD40-2 with the third unit, an SD60 still painted in Conrail Blue. |

As train 238 exits bridge 7 across the Elizabeth River, on its journey into the Portlock yard, one of its four power units includes NS1437, an GP15-1. This provided for an interesting mix of power with NS8912, a D9-40CW up front and 2 GP38's following. |

Train 428 heads eastbound through south Chesapeake VA toward bridge 7 spaning the Elizabeth River. Its 90 cars of coal are destined for the Lamberts Point coaling piers in Norfolk. Both power units are D9-40C's with NS 8778 in the lead. |

On a crystal clean December morning, train NP-22 with a trio of power makes its way East across the swing bridge spanning the Eastern Branch of the Elizabeth River. In the lead is NS 9379 a D9-40CW followed by NS 8737, a D8-40C and NS 6592, an SD60. |
